'Empire Strikes Back', 'The Exorcist' Among 25 Films Named to National Historic Registry: "
'Airplane!,' 'The Empire Strikes Back,' 'The Exorcist,' and 'All the President's Men,' were among the 25 films named by the Library of Congress to the National Film Registry on Tuesday for their cultural, historical or aesthetic significance.
Though many of the films named to the list include people who recently died -- 'Airplane' star Leslie Nielsen, 'Empire' director Irvin Kershner, 'Pink Panther' director Blake Edwards -- a spokesman said their inclusion was likely a coincidence. The decisions are made in late November and early December.
The films, including documentaries, shorts, and experimental films, cover the period from 1891 to 1996. There are now 550 films in the registry.
